Ceramic furnishings - Ginkgo Fireplace Surround

My Gingko Leaf Fireplace surround is in a walkout, finished basement of a private home. The client installed a gas fireplace and wanted to enhance the light and sunny character of a vital part of their living space. This surround helps to do that.

A block-full of gingko trees inspired me to design this surround. I was walking down a Georgetown street on an October day just after the trees had dropped their lovely fan-shaped leaves and scooped up a lap-full and sketched until I had the design that you see.

I made the 1/2" thick tiles by hand and sculpted the leaves and branches on the tiles. The flat tiles on the half-moon shaped hearth seat continue the gingko leaf theme. The client chose the palette of seven colors with which I glazed the tiles. The entire surround measures 8' tall by 5' wide.
